What is a shrub and why should you be drinking it?
In this context, the word "shrub" comes from the Arabic word "sharāb" meaning "to drink". Historically, vinegar was used (instead of citrus) in colonial America as a way to preserve fruit with sugar prior to advent of refrigeration.
In this case, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the "mother" (not all shrubs are made this way) is the base for everything Element Shrub makes. To this, Element adds whole, fresh fruit (no juices, no concentrates, no extracts, no oils), organic cane sugar and herbs and spices. This allows Element Shrub to achieve the perfect balance of sweet, savory, tangy and an almost umami complexity made with 100% real, simple, all-natural ingredients. Naturally vegan and gluten free. Made in Brooklyn in small batches. Choose your flavor:
-Cranberry Hibiscus: It may sound like Thanksgiving, but it with a hint of fresh watermelon to balance the tartness of the cranberries, you'll find it can be used all year round. Pair with vodka, gin, light (white) rum, bourbon, brandy, sparkling wine, lemon, orange, ginger, rosemary, mustard, tahini, sage and more.
-Blueberry Rosemary: Fresh blueberries and fresh rosemary come together in a wonderful sweet, tart and savory balance. Pair with rye whiskey, gin, tequila, white rum, sparkling wine, grenadine, elderflower, lemon, orange, ginger, mustard, lamb.
-Chai Pear: Tastes like Christmas in a bottle; perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice. Pair with bourbon, whiskey, rye whiskey, dark rum, barrel-aged gin, orange, grapefruit, peach, cherry, pork, maple, fennel, vanilla and more.
Element Shrub's story began because Charlie and his wife couldn’t find a drink that was healthy, complex, made with real ingredients and non-alcoholic while she was pregnant with their first child. That said, shrubs are incredibly versatile and can be used for making craft cocktails and even to incorporate into your cooking.
